Split a PDF: Extract the Pages You Need Without Re-Encoding Them
Extract pages or ranges from a PDF, understand the ZIP output, and choose between splitting and removing pages for the file you actually need.
A 90-page report contains the four pages your client asked for. A bank statement includes one page you need for a visa application. A scanned bundle has a signed page buried in the middle. Splitting the PDF is faster than printing and rescanning, and it avoids the quality loss of a screenshot.
There is one detail to understand before you click: splitting can mean “extract these pages into separate files” or “keep these pages in one document”. OpenToola’s Split PDF tool does the first. The pages are copied into individual PDFs and packaged in a ZIP. If you need one file with pages 4–7, the Remove Pages tool is often the better route.
What splitting does to the file
The selected pages are copied into new PDF documents. The content of each page is not re-encoded, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution. The original PDF is not modified.
Document-level features do not always travel with a page. Bookmarks, form fields, annotations, links that point to other pages, and digital signatures can be lost or broken when pages are copied into a new document. If the PDF is a signed contract or an interactive form, test the result before sending it.
A password-protected PDF must be unlocked before it can be split. The browser cannot read the pages until the password is removed in the application that created the file.
The page range syntax
Enter pages as numbers separated by commas, or as ranges with a hyphen. 1-3,5 selects pages 1, 2, 3 and 5. 7 selects only page 7. all selects every page.
The tool sorts the pages in ascending order and removes duplicates. If you enter 5,1, the output will still start with page 1. If the order matters, extract the pages and then use Reorder Pages or Merge PDF in the order you need.
Use the PDF page index, not the page number printed on the page. A report may start at page 1 of the PDF but show “Page 12” because it is the twelfth page of a larger document. Check the thumbnail or the page count in the tool.
One page versus several pages
If you select one page, the tool downloads a single PDF named page-7.pdf (the number is the PDF page). That is the simplest case: one page, one file.
If you select several pages, the tool creates a ZIP with one PDF per page: page-1.pdf, page-2.pdf, page-3.pdf. Unzip it before sending anything. If the recipient expects one file, you now have several files to combine.
This is where the workflow matters. To extract pages 4–7 as one PDF, use Remove Pages and select every page except 4–7. The result is one PDF containing the pages you kept. Alternatively, split the pages and merge them back with Merge PDF. Removing is usually faster and preserves the document structure better.
When to split
Splitting is useful when you need separate files: one invoice per customer, one chapter per class, one page per applicant. It is also useful for isolating a page before OCR or before sending a single page to a portal.
If you need to delete confidential pages before sharing a document, use Remove Pages rather than splitting. Splitting creates a new file with the pages you selected; removing creates a new file with the pages you kept. Both can work, but the mental model is different and one is less error-prone for redaction.
If you need to extract a single page for a signature, split it, sign it, and keep the original untouched. Do not sign the whole document if only one page needs a signature.
What about scanned PDFs?
A scanned PDF is a set of page images. Splitting copies those images into new PDFs without re-encoding. The text, if any, is not searchable unless the original had an OCR layer. If you need to search the extracted pages, run OCR after splitting.
Splitting before OCR can save time: run OCR only on the pages you need, not the whole 200-page scan. For a single page, the OCR result is easier to check.
Page size, orientation and blank pages
Splitting does not rotate or resize pages. If page 7 is landscape in a portrait report, it stays landscape in the extracted file. If the page is blank because the scanner fed two sheets, splitting keeps the blank page. Remove it with Remove Pages before sending.
Check the extracted page at 100 % zoom. A page that looks fine in the thumbnail can have a cut-off footer or a missing signature line. If the page is cut off, the original PDF was probably cropped; splitting cannot restore what is not there.
File names and ZIP contents
A ZIP named split.zip with files named page-1.pdf, page-2.pdf is functional but not helpful. Rename the files after extraction: invoice-2026-041.pdf, passport-page.pdf, contract-signature.pdf.
Check the number of files against the number of pages you selected. If you asked for four pages and got three, one page was outside the range or the input was malformed. The tool ignores invalid parts of the range; a typo like 1-3;5 may select fewer pages than expected.
If the ZIP will not open, download it again. A partial download can produce a corrupt archive. Do not rename a .zip to .pdf; the formats are different.
Split, remove or reorder?
Use Split when you want each selected page as its own file. Use Remove Pages when you want to keep several pages together but delete the rest. Use Reorder Pages when you want all pages in a different sequence.
If you are unsure, ask what the recipient needs: one file or several. “Send me pages 4 and 7” can mean two files or one two-page file. Clarify before you spend time renaming.
Signatures and forms
A digital signature can be invalidated when a page is copied into a new document. If the PDF is signed and the signature must remain valid, do not split it. Send the original file or ask the sender for a version that contains only the relevant pages.
Form fields can also be lost. If the recipient needs to fill or sign the extracted page, check that the fields survived. If they did not, request a new form or use the original document.
Splitting on iPhone and Android
On iPhone, save the PDF to Files, open the Split PDF tool in Safari, choose the file, enter the range and convert. The ZIP downloads to Files; tap it to extract. If the ZIP opens in a preview instead of extracting, use the Files app’s compress/extract option or a file manager.
On Android, the browser can read the PDF from Downloads, Drive or the file picker. Enter the range, split, and open the ZIP with the Files app. Android file managers often extract to a folder named after the archive; check that folder, not just the Downloads list.
Phones are slower at rendering thumbnails. A 200-page PDF may take a while to load. If the tool seems stuck, give it a moment before closing the tab. For a single page, you can avoid the thumbnail cost by using Remove Pages and keeping only the page you need.
Finding the right page
The thumbnail grid is the safest way to identify a page. Look for the page number, a heading, a signature block or a table. Printed page numbers can differ from PDF page numbers, especially in reports with a cover page and a table of contents.
If you cannot see the page clearly, open the PDF in a reader and note the page index shown in the reader’s page field. That index is what the split tool uses. Write the range down before returning to the browser; a mistyped range can produce the wrong file without an obvious error.
For a long document, extract a small test range first. If page 37 is the one you need, split page 37 alone, open it, and confirm. Then extract the rest.
What to do with the extracted pages
If you need one combined file, merge the extracted pages in the desired order with Merge PDF. If you need to send one page, rename it clearly and attach it. If you need to sign it, open the page in the Sign PDF tool, place the signature and download.
For a portal that accepts only one file, do not upload a ZIP. Extract the page, merge if needed, and upload the PDF. Read the portal’s size limit before choosing the resolution; a scanned page at 300 DPI can be several megabytes.
Common errors
A range like 0-3 starts at zero, which is not a page. The tool clamps it, but the result may surprise you. Start at 1.
A range like 5-3 is reversed. The tool may ignore it or produce no pages. Write ranges from low to high.
A semicolon instead of a comma, or a space inside a number, can make part of the range invalid. Use digits, commas and hyphens only.
If the output PDF is empty, the selected pages were outside the document. Check the page count shown by the tool before splitting.
Privacy
The split runs in the browser. OpenToola does not upload the PDF and does not keep a copy. The extracted files are downloaded to your device.
That matters for bank statements, medical records and identity documents. Delete the extracted files after sending them, and avoid using a shared computer for documents you would not leave on a desk. The original PDF remains on your disk; remove it only when you are sure you no longer need it.

Frequently asked questions
Does splitting reduce PDF quality?
No. The selected pages are copied into new PDF files without re-encoding, so text, images and vectors keep their original quality.
Why do I get a ZIP instead of one PDF?
When you select more than one page, the tool creates one PDF per page and packages them in a ZIP. To keep several pages in one PDF, remove the pages you do not need or merge the extracted files.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The split happens in your browser. The PDF is not sent to a server.
